This project began with an exploration of value, where I experimented with sketches, doodles, and textures like cross-hatching and stippling to create varying levels of depth. I also took the liberty to invent my own patterns, adding a touch of creativity to the process. Using these value patterns, I then worked on bringing the supplied image of the panda to life. I started by outlining the panda and assigning values to different areas, carefully referencing my pattern worksheet, which served as a helpful guide, akin to a paint-by-number approach. Each part was labeled with a numerical value from 1 to 6, representing the gradation of light to dark. I began with the background to make progress and boost my confidence, and then focused on the darkest values, followed by the lightest values, and finally the mid-tones. I am content with the final outcome and take pride in overcoming the challenges, particularly in rendering the forehead, which posed as the most demanding aspect of the project.
